The Placer County Board of Supervisors proclaimed October as PlacerGROWN month at yesterday’s board meeting in Auburn. PlacerGROWN, a Placer County partner, connects residents and visitors with local family farmers, ranchers and vintners whose passion is to produce the finest fruits, vegetables, meats and other agricultural products the region has to offer.

Placer County to transition to new benefits system for food, healthcare, employment assistance
On October 31, Placer will join dozens of other California counties in transitioning to a new, easy-to-use universal public benefits system. With this change, the current MyBenefits CalWIN (MyBCW) public portal will change to a new website: BenefitsCal.com.

Placer County is encouraging business professionals who have a good listening ear and are interested in improving their conflict resolution and negotiation skills to attend an upcoming training course to become a certified mediator.

Safe Routes to School program celebrates new ‘traffic garden’ at Auburn Elementary
On Friday, students at Auburn Elementary School celebrated the addition of a new ‘traffic garden’ on campus, holding a bike rodeo with school staff and community partners to mark the occasion. Traffic gardens are miniature, child-scale traffic towns that provide a safe space for children to learn the rules of the road away from street traffic.

Navy veteran will serve as county’s new veterans service officer
There’s a new face ready to support Placer County veterans and their families. Matthew Galvin, a longtime Navy officer, has been appointed the county’s new veterans service officer, overseeing an office that supports veterans’ access to county resources.

Public input wanted to strengthen Placer County mental health programs
Placer County community members are invited to participate in an online survey to help strengthen county mental health services. Health and Human Services is collecting community input to help shape the county’s three-year Mental Health Services Act plan.

Public Health recognizes Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Week
Placer County Public Health is joining partners across the state in recognizing Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Week from Oct. 23-29. A week-long information campaign will include fact sheets, web-based presentations and educational materials about childhood lead poisoning.

Video: Dowd Road Bridge replacement complete
Work is complete on the Dowd Road bridge replacement project in rural Lincoln, greatly reducing the risk of seasonal flooding over the roadway and making way for two-way traffic.

New use for vacant fire station in Tahoe City
Finding a new use for the old Fire Station 51 in Tahoe City is under discussion once again. At its meeting Tuesday, the board approved a short-term, non-exclusive right to negotiate an agreement with the Climate and Wildfire Institute to discuss the potential future reuse or redevelopment of the vacant fire station.

As new benefits system rolls out, Placer County introduces easy resource for new applicants
Today, Placer County became part of the new benefits platform that is gradually rolling out statewide: BenefitsCal.com. The new system allows community members to easily apply for, renew and access a variety of benefits, ranging from food to healthcare to employment. Existing benefits customers will need to create an account on the new website.
