Commons Beach Restoration

Located lakeside in the heart of Tahoe City, Commons Beach is one of the North Shore’s most popular beaches. In addition to restoration and expansion of the sandy beach area, this project restored a playground, picnic facilities and a large grassy area.

Features

Commons Beach serves as a gateway to North Lake Tahoe for millions of visitors each year. Located lakeside in the center of Tahoe City, it features convenient access to the lake for kayaks, canoes and paddleboards. The many features of the beach and adjoining park, including a playground, picnic facilities and a large grassy area were all improved as a result of the restoration project. Owned by Placer County and maintained by the Tahoe City Public Utilities District, Commons Beach is host to free summer concerts and an outdoor movie series, gathering visitors and residents alike together on the lakeshore.

Funding

$275,000 in Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) funding was allocated to this $6.2 M restoration project which was completed in 2003. An additional $30,000 in TOT funding was allocated in October 2014 to replace sand that has been carried away by prevailing winds over the last decade.
